Free Tours Lisbon

There is nothing better than a guided tour in English to discover all the details of the Portuguese capital. This city offers many unique places, full of history and full of beauty. You’ll be happy to know that Blue Emotion offers Free Tours in Lisbon.. You will enjoy getting to know, in great detail, the most remarkable places of the Portuguese capital with tours free of payment and permanence.

What are Blue Emotion’s free tours of Lisbon like?

As we have already explained, Blue Emotion’s Lisbon free tours are free of charge and in Spanish. Our guides also love to show you around the city. They know its history and every nook and cranny. But there are even more good things why you should choose us to visit the city. We start by telling you about our itinerary.

We have two options to get to know the Portuguese capital, the “Free Tour Lisboa Imprescindible” and the “Free Tour Lisboa Bohemia”. Both cover interesting parts of the city, although each focuses on different aspects. We talk about both of them below, so you can choose the one you like best, although our recommendation is that you do both, as they are complementary.

Free Tour Lisbon Indispensable

With this tour you will get to know the most interesting parts of the city, from Baixa to Chiado.. We will show you the most important architecture and monuments you will see along the way. We will also tell you about the customs and typical gastronomy in these places.

The Plaza del Comercio is the meeting point for the start of this tour. It is one of the busiest places in Lisbon. This is the beginning of the most important commercial area of the city. Fashion shops stand out, although there are also decoration and gift shops.

The Baixa area underwent important urban changes from 1755 onwards. On this date an earthquake occurred that devastated much of Lisbon. A fire then broke out and devoured the wooden beams of some of the buildings that were left standing. Finally, a tidal wave finally destroyed what was left of the lower area and took the lives of thousands of Portuguese.

Today the geometrical building is preserved in the area. The streets in the lower area are tidier and more robust than in the past. Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, known as the Marquis of Pombal, rebuilt the city by order of King José I. It was he who decided that the building should have these characteristics. This area is known as Baixa Pombalina.

But it won’t be all you’ll see in the trading square. We’ll take you to see other important corners of the city, such as Rossio Square (Pedro IV), which served as the centre of the Holy Inquisition. It is a lively spot, chosen by Lisbon locals to meet up and spend some time talking. You can take the opportunity to take some photographs.

You will also see the the Church of São Domingos. You will pass inside to enjoy its fascinating interior. When it was built in 1241, it became the largest church in Lisbon. Along the way we will show you other places of interest and tell you about famous people and writers, such as Fernando Pessoa.

Another interesting topic the guide will talk about is the Carnation Revolution. On 25 April 1974 there was a military uprising in Portugal. This coup put an end to the authoritarian and corporatist political regime that had ruled for 48 consecutive years. Democracy entered the country and every non-European Portuguese province gained its independence.

Free Tour Lisbon Bohemia

This tour starts at the Market Square. Our guide will take you to the Town Hall, so you can see its facade. He will explain how the regency period and the First Republic were experienced in Portugal.

Then you will meet the Pink Street and you will see for yourself why it is called that way. Our guide will tell you some interesting stories that took place at this site during the Second World War. This theme will also be present when walking along Largo de Corpo Santo or Largo de Sao Paulo.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Portuguese culture is its gastronomy. The best way to get to know the main ingredients of its recipes, such as fresh fish or seafood, is to stop by the Ribeira Market. A stroll through the aisles will give you an idea of the variety and freshness of Portuguese dishes.

You will also see the Elevador da Bica. This is one of the oldest funiculars in Lisbon, linking Rua da Bica with the Bairro Alto. Once at the top you will be guided through the streets, full of typical Portuguese shops and bars.

The route will continue through the streets until it reaches the Mirador de San Pedro de Alcántara. The views will amaze you. You will see the Alfama district, St. George’s Castle and the Tagus River in the background.

One of the most bohemian things in Lisbon are the tiles. Walking along Largo da Trindade you will see tiled facades. What was once a means of giving splendour to the city is today a unique identifying feature of the city of Lisbon.

And, of course, when talking about Bohemian Lisbon, you will walk through the Chiado. Exclusive shops, cafés and bookshops bring life to this area where tourists and locals mingle. With a bit of luck, you’ll see one of the street musicians playing Fado to the delight of passers-by.

Finally, as part of the city’s culture, you will see the San Carlos Theatre and Opera House, built in 1972. The works were carried out on the ruins of the Tejo Theatre, devastated in 1755 by the great earthquake.
